Why are some flares inclined from the vertical?

Where appropriate, flare tips can be inclined and rotated away from critical points in order to “throw” the flame away from those point locations where radiation is a concern.  This is quite common for offshore flares rather than onshore flares as it can help to reduce the overall tower height or boom length. Inclining a flare tip can also help when an existing installation is debottlenecked and has to handle greater capacity.
